Rising stars for the New York Yankees

With spring training set to start in late February, each team is filled with hope for a run at a World Series title and fresh faces are ready to make a name for themselves in the majors. After finishing in fourth place in the American League East in 2023, the New York Yankees will look to improve on their 82-80 record from a year ago.

Here are three rising stars who will look to make an impact for the Yankees in 2024.

Austin Wells, catcher

2023 MLB stats: .229/.257/.486, four home runs and 13 RBI in 19 games played.

After initially struggling during his MLB debut last season, Yankees catcher Austin Wells ended the season on a good note with hits in eight of his last ten games in 2023 including four home runs.

In 2024, the 24-year-old is primed to make a big impact for the 27-time World Series Champions. A career .260 hitter in the minor leagues with 53 home runs, Wells is looking to prove he is more than just a glove behind the plate.

With Yankees catchers ranking near the bottom of the league in virtually all hitting categories including slugging percentage and OPS, Wells taking the next step is important to the team's success next season.

Jasson Dominguez, outfield

2023 MLB stats: .258/.303/.677, four home runs and seven RBI in eight games played.

Twenty-year-old outfielder Jasson Dominguez finally made his much-anticipated MLB debut last season for the Yankees and he didn't disappoint even though it was short-lived due to injury.

Hitting a home run in his first at-bat off of future Hall-of-Fame pitcher Justin Verlander, "The Martian" proved that his talent was out of this world.

A talented switch-hitter with massive power and great speed in a compact body, Dominguez was ranked as the 73rd-best prospect in the MLB last season before getting his call-up to the majors.

In his three seasons in the minors, he slashed .266/.372/.431 with 101 extra-base hits, 154 RBI and 86 stolen bases in 294 games played.

Surrounded by talent including Aaron Judge and the two new offseason additions Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo, Dominguez will have the opportunity to play with one of the most gifted outfield trios in baseball.

Dominguez will be able to come into his own without the expectations of carrying the offense, and that should benefit him greatly as he gets accustomed to life in New York.

Anthony Volpe, shortstop

2023 MLB stats: .209/.283/.383, 21 home runs and 60 RBI in 159 games played.

Coming off a solid rookie season in 2023, Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is looking to make the next step toward stardom in 2024.

A first-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, Volpe quickly rose through the Yankees minor league system where he spent two and a half seasons before becoming the everyday shortstop in New York.

Slashing .262/.376/.505 with 140 extra-base hits, 162 RBI and 89 stolen bases in 275 career minor league games, the 22-year-old struggled to make consistent contact in his rookie season watching his average dip to .209.

While his power and speed both came into play in his first season with the Yankees, they will hope that he can put the bat on the ball more and let his athleticism squeak out a few extra hits in 2024.

While his bat was inconsistent at times, his glove was not.

With 15 defensive runs saved according to The Fielding Bible, Volpe ranked third out of all shortstops last season while playing the second most innings at the position trailing only New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor.

Volpe will look to build on all of the positives in 2024 while trying to find a more consistent approach at the plate, as he looks to be the next great Yankees shortstop in franchise history.
